چکیده

As a logical next step in improving the radio-to-submm spectral index as a redshift indicator (Carilli & Yun), we have investigated a technique of using the entire radio-to-FIR spectral energy distribution (SED) for deriving photometric redshifts for dusty starburst galaxies at high redshift. A dusty starburst SED template is developed from theoretical understanding on various emission mechanisms related to massive star formation process, and the template parameters are selected by examining the observed properties of 23 IR selected starburst galaxies: Td = 58 K, β = 1.35, and fnth = 1. The major improvement in using this template SED for deriving photometric redshifts is the significant reduction in redshift uncertainty over the spectral index technique, particularly at higher redshifts. Intrinsic dispersion in the radio and FIR SEDs as well as absolute calibration and measurement errors contribute to the overall uncertainty of the technique. The derived photometric redshifts for five submm galaxies with known redshifts agree well with their spectroscopic redshifts within the estimated uncertainty. Photometric redshifts for seven submm galaxies without known spectroscopic redshifts (HDF850.1, CUDSS14.1, Lockman850.1, SMM J00266+1708, SMM J09429+4658, SMM J14009+0252, FIRBACK J1608+5418) are derived. Subject headings: galaxies: high-redshift – galaxies: starburst – infrared: galaxies – submillimeter – radio continuum: galaxies – techniques: photometric

Far-Infrared Spectral Energy Distributions and Photometric Redshifts of Dusty Galaxies

We infer the large-scale source parameters of dusty galaxies from their observed spectral energy distributions (SEDs) using the analytic radiative transfer methodology presented in Chakrabarti & McKee (2005). For local ultra-luminous infrared galaxies (ULIRGs), we show that the millimeter to far-infrared (FIR) SEDs can be well fit using the standard dust opacity index of 2 when self-consistent ...

Improved Templates for Photometric Redshifts of Submm Sources

There is growing evidence that some star-forming galaxies at z > 1 are characterized by high efficiencies and specific star formation rates. In the local universe, these traits are shared by “active” Blue Compact Dwarf galaxies (BCDs) with compact and dense star-forming regions. The Spectral Energy Distributions (SEDs) of these BCDs are dominated by young massive star clusters, embedded in a co...

Confirmation of the effectiveness of sub-mm source redshift estimation based on rest-frame radio–FIR photometry

We present a comparison between the published optical, IR and CO spectroscopic redshifts of 15 (sub-)mm galaxies and their photometric redshifts as derived from longwavelength (radio–mm–FIR) photometric data. The redshift accuracy measured for 12 sub-mm galaxies with at least one robustly-determined colour in the radio–mm–FIR regime is δz ≈ 0.30 (r.m.s.). Despite the wide range of spectral ener...

Radio-mm-FIR Photometric Redshifts for (sub-)mm Galaxies

We present a comparison between the published optical, IR and CO spectroscopic redshifts of 86 (sub-)mm galaxies and their photometric redshifts as derived from long-wavelength (radio–mm–FIR) photometric data. The redshift accuracy measured for 13 sub-mm galaxies with at least one robustlydetermined colour in the radio–mm–FIR regime and additional constraining upper limits is ∆z ≈ 0.30. This ac...

Constraints on the Accuracy of Photometric Redshifts Derived from BLAST and Herschel/SPIRE Sub-mm Surveys

More than 150 galaxies have been detected in blank-field millimetre and sub-millimetre surveys. However the redshift distribution of sub-mm galaxies remains uncertain due to the difficulty in identifying their optical-IR counterparts, and subsequently obtaining their spectroscopic emission-line redshifts. In this paper we discuss results from a Monte-Carlo analysis of the accuracy with which on...
